Background of the Study

In many parts of Nigeria, including Katsina State, traditional beliefs and practices play a significant role in influencing health behaviors, particularly in rural and underserved areas (Abdullahi et al., 2023). These beliefs, which include the use of herbal remedies, spiritual healing, and traditional birth practices, often coexist with modern medical practices and can influence the way parents seek and adhere to healthcare for their children. While some traditional practices may have beneficial effects, others can be harmful and hinder the effectiveness of modern pediatric healthcare interventions (Okoro et al., 2024).

In Katsina State, where access to modern healthcare may be limited, understanding the influence of traditional beliefs on pediatric health is critical. This study will explore how traditional beliefs shape parental decisions regarding childhood health, including their attitudes toward immunization, disease prevention, and treatment options.

Statement of the Problem

While modern medical practices offer effective treatments for childhood illnesses, traditional beliefs often lead to delays in seeking appropriate care, use of unproven remedies, and non-adherence to recommended healthcare practices. In Katsina State, this may contribute to higher rates of preventable diseases and mortality among children. This study seeks to investigate how traditional beliefs influence pediatric health outcomes and to identify potential strategies to integrate traditional practices with modern healthcare in a way that benefits children’s health.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the influence of traditional beliefs on the health-seeking behavior of parents for their children in Katsina State.
  2. To identify the impact of traditional practices on pediatric health outcomes in Katsina State.
  3. To recommend strategies to address the challenges posed by traditional beliefs in pediatric healthcare in Katsina State.

Research Questions

  1. How do traditional beliefs influence parents’ decisions regarding pediatric healthcare in Katsina State?
  2. What impact do traditional health practices have on pediatric health outcomes in Katsina State?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to integrate traditional beliefs with modern pediatric healthcare practices?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Traditional beliefs significantly influence parents’ health-seeking behavior for their children in Katsina State.
  2. Traditional health practices contribute to poorer pediatric health outcomes in Katsina State.
  3. Integrating traditional and modern healthcare practices will improve pediatric health outcomes in Katsina State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on parents and healthcare providers in Katsina State, particularly those in rural and underserved communities. Data will be collected through surveys, interviews, and community-based focus groups. Limitations include the difficulty in accessing remote communities and potential biases in traditional healers’ responses.
